Hi there
I am trying to improve my singing voice, unfortunately I can't afford singing lessons (the bains of a poor student). I would love to be ab;e to improve just the overall tone of my voice (Sorry if wrong terminology). Here is an example of my voice at the moment:

Any tips on where to start would be great as I love singing but when I try to record something its not very good.

Thanks
Ryan

Yeah man, I'll help you out.

You are a bit nasal, and not a lot of resonance, otherwise you seem on the right track. Your pitch is good : )

So it's all trial and error really. You can learn, and should learn different techniques for getting that clear sound/resonance/twang. Bit it's going to take experimentation, and time to gain the experience and awareness.

Try singing single notes. Choose a word that's easy to sing for you. And go through your range, note by note. Record this. And take notes in a diary, on what you are doing, when you get the sound you want. Then repeat.

The techniques. Firstly I would try massaging your jaw and neck. This will help loosen your jaw hinge, and help create space in the back of your throat, to stop you from pushing the sound up into your nose.

Secondly, practice not just your word, semi tone by semi tone. Also practice the different singing vowels semi tone by semi tone, and record this to hear how it changes your sound color.

By the way. I'm beginning as a Vocal Coach, so have created free lessons, with demonstrations and scales for exercising here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXCrEHXiwwM91dhx0HonrSQ

And lessons via Skype are extremely cheap. $20.00 AU and hour.

But as my channel grows, there will be nothing in the private lessons that cant be found in the videos.

I do have the information you need, I'm just not very experienced.

Hope I can help you, I understand the struggle of needing help but not being able to afford it. Which is why I offer this service.

Michael.
