My latest cover of stevie wonder SKELETONS. Rather than just a vocal cover I decided to rebuild the song from scratch and give it my own personal twist. I really wanted the song to build to a climax toward the end as I feel while Stevies vocals are amazing, the original song doesn't really build to anything in the way I want.

This is part of my own training project I will be doing where I plan to do 2 covers a month completely from scratch so that I can better hone my skills and ear as a songwriter and singer.

I created this by recording several takes and then pasting them together to create the finished version, so sorry if some of the camera shots are out of sync to the audio!

I decided to sing this song in a lighter mixed voice and build it to a heavier sounding climax at the end. I'm no Stevie but I think I brought a new twist to the song! I hope you enjoy it.

Like I'm been saying,

F*CKING BADASS!!!!

I CANT STOP LISTENING TO IT

Especially because you sound like YOU COULD SING IN THIS POCKET FOR HOURS ON END

I know you've said in past covers you knew exactly what you did wrong and you're still learning etc. Did you feel anything technically incorrect during this? It just sounds so dead on and empathetically comfortable to me as a listener.

I'm not a fan of the whole "I'm not good enough" to get more attention thing...but there are lots of things I would love to change about this cover for sure!! For one, I never do them with the same attention to detail I do my solo work with. My tone isn't in the right spot for me for many of the areas, it gets too thin trebley at many parts, part of it is me and part of is the mic. The other mic I used on my journey cover is more balanced but that cover is also too trebely because I EQ'd my voice stupidly. But this cover I didnt' EQ it and it came out super bright!

So if I was to do it again I would make an effort to counteract this by singing a little darker and ground myself more to get a more even tone. my pitch and riffs/runs are sloppy - because I didn't really study the song, I just did the cover from memory, so there's lots of intricacies I missed.

in 3 weeks from now (without practicing any further on the song) I will be able to sing it SO MUCH BETTER. Why? Because just posting the song makes me critique it cos I know lots will watch it. If I don't post it...I feel I don't get that weird jump in gains.

But despite these things I'm happy with the cover as a whole. I think my voice isn't what is good about it, but what I did to the song as a whole! I am more proud of the spin I put on the song. After all I am a songwriter so I want to showcase that a lot more than just doing a vocal cover... As for sitting in this pocket for hours...yeah definitely. I was really sitting in that "speech level" mix the entire time...It feels very relaxed like I was just speaking loudly through the whole song except some of the belting near the end which was a little heavier.

Glad you enjoyed it - means a lot to me!!Laugh

Since i listen to your covers, my musical tastes have really opened up. I have lately rediscovered a lot of tunes that i had forgotten when i developped my taste for hard rock.
The Marvin Gaye cover was amazing but this one simply blew my ears. Not only the voice, but also the interpretation.

I also really like all the subtleties, the vocal layers you do (it sounds always spot on, never messy), the crispy tone you get when you raise intensity (which is different from my own rasp), and also the Mickael Jackson-esque "oo-oos".

It makes me forget how though this song is! Lots of staccato, high pitch with occasional run downs etc I would proably pull like crazy and until i run out of gas in the middle of the song :D

Good job on the track! Did you play all instruments yourself?

Phil I just briefly listened to the original to compare and you definitely kicked the instrumentation up like 5 notches! I love the high keyboard ostinato in the verses, the distorted guitars, and the handclap/snare sound layered over the main drum track. Not to mention loads of vocal layers! Also like how you changed the chorus melody a bit, it kind of has more range and movement in your version

I'm now really noticing the double lead guitar climb up stuff at the end too, that's doing so much to build up the intensity. Brilliant stuff

Thanks Owen...there's a lot of layers there.. and some brassy stabs....I really learned the layering stuff by studying a lot of Marvin Gaye and old SEGA music ha ha. The handclap snare layers are all inspired by MJ...so much for "be unique don't copy anything"...to get an original sound you gotta study the greats! It's all there for us so why not?

Thanks for the comments guys.

Wow! you sir are talented. You arranged the song to suit your style, played all the instruments, sang and mixed it all. I am thoroughly impressed.
