OfflineNow for something completely different (for me). A little number from Elton! Another one-take anything goes thing.
So today I was doing my KTVA workouts like usual when I just sort of "found" my mixed voice while I was stretching chest. I am sort of getting ahead of myself for KTVA because mixed voice is advised to be put on hold before you can build a strong chest/head voice. I sort of went in and out of my mix/head voice and then full chest voice at certain times just to get a feel for the sensation in the throat. I was a bit iffy on pitch which is unlike me because of it. It really DOES feel like a balancing act (and I lost my balance unfortunately a few times
) . I can't remember who quoted that but it totally describes the feeling I had the whole time.
Anyways I hope you guys enjoy this cover/experiment/ practice session

Keep on rockin' \m/
Edit: this is pretty much raw and the only effect I did was overdubbing to blend the tracks together (crudely)

OfflineHi Wabba,
if you've found your mix, start to sing more with the mix from now on. Then what will happen is it will strengthen and you will find that "chest stretching" will be done inside the mix. THis is how you develop a one seamless voice.
You can go back to the lighter parts of KTVA and do them all now in the mixed voice.
When applying it to songs it is best to work phrase by phrase.

Offlineit's rough, I would not recommend performing or releasing this to the public, but as a technique practice I do think you are landing in some good new spots in your voice that will grow and stabilize over time. I wouldn't call it presentable at this stage, it's vulnerable, but that's good for the practice room because at some points you've gotta go out of your comfort zone and feel like you're holding on to success with your pinky finger, periodically slipping and catching yourself again (wow this is a really dark simile sorry haha) before you fully succeed, at any skill at life. Keep working with this during your practice and over time you'll be able to really grab on to the coordination with comfort.
One thing I would ask though is how long did you warm up for this? Based on my kind of...auditory sensing (what the fuck is the word for this - it's something me and Phil have talked about - when you listen to a singer and you can feel in your own body what they are going through, it's a sympathetic kind of sense you develop) it sounds like you were already fatigued by the time you recorded this?
In that case you may want to think about how you can either add more breaks to your warm up or make it more efficient so that you can find this spot earlier. I know it takes practice and self discovery etc. but just keep that goal in mind.
Or I could be totally off about that assumption. My vocal ear is still developing

OfflineWow thanks for the honest review Owen! You really know how to go in depth.
Ok first things first, I made a few big mistakes before even hitting the record button. 1. I had headphones in listening to the track while recording and I think I had the music up WAY too high, which also affected my pitch perception. 2. I did not practice it phrase by phrase, like Phil mentioned and every new verse/chorus sounded like it caught me by surprise ( which is probably pretty audible too) before recording it. What you're hearing is my VERY first time singing that song. Its stupid to just think you can do anything without a bit of training and I guess I just got cocky here because I was feeling good by the time the workout ended. I really would've done better if I had just practiced the damn thing until I could sing it with my eyes closed. (well maybe not literally hahaha) I was honestly just seeing how this would go and I was curious on how I would sound doing someone like Elton. Well I guess for now its back the to yellow brick road for me.
I'm also used to singing songs that are either in full chest or have more of a gentle head voice sound. When it came to having a mixed sound, ESPECIALLY a lighter mix, that still has to have some degree of chest resonance in it, its a constant tug-of-war for me and you could hear that I was holding back at certain parts of the song (actually for most of the song that was the case) way too much and it sounded like I was struggling. NOT an easy one, that's for sure, and I underestimated this song.
As far as fatigue goes, I did sing for a little more than an hour in choir, but that was earlier in the day 12:30-1:45 P.M. I also did some Math for about an hour and a half after a late lunch (Rational expressions can go to hell
) and then I only took a little 30 min break after I finally got home before I started the KTVA workout. I worked on that for about an hour and a half on just chest stretching exercises (and to some degree, mixed voice workout because I was staying in my chest resonance until the very last note in the scale.) I then had dinner and another few hours went by and I was inspired by watching a lesson Ken was teaching and it was covering "Mixed voice application in the style of Mickey Thomas". I guess I was a bit tired by this point because it was around 8:30 a few hours after my workout ended, but at the same time, I was more pumped than fatigued physically because I felt inspired by watching the lesson.
Anyways thanks again for any other feedback, I really appreciate it. I'll just have to put more effort into practicing something rather than just expecting to get it right in one go (Gee what a notion)

OfflineWabba,
Try to practice and sing more in this coordination. You will be surprised at how well it frees up your voice when you get stable at it

listen to the master Wabba!
this is something I really have to work on personally too. this vulnerable spot, if you never go there, it will never be given the opportunity to improve and become more stable. so even if it's not stable enough for performing yet we have to work the hell out of it when we practice
Phil would you say a good analogy is that practicing this coordination more and more kind of "irons it out"? Gets it all smooth so that we CAN perform it? That's what I'm imagining and hoping the result will be. Also does it come a lot from just from sheer practice or do tons of fine technique tweaks need to be attended to along the way?

Yes ironing it out is a great analogy i think!!!
It will become reliable the more you use it. If you can GET IN THERE then it will strengthen by itself over time. You will even notice it strengthen in the same session if you make a vow to SIT IN THAT area of your voice and not push any chest over it. IT can be tempting to want to pull chest through it but if you just sit in that coorindation for 40 mins you will be soaring!
