Tommy,

For the gesture thing, its funny to see that some musicians are so used to sing while playing another instrument at the same time that the patterns seem deeply seated in their muscle memory.
I remember a funny clip of James Hetfield singing without his guitar, it was just weird. Looked like he was playing on a non existing instrument while singing

In this clip is another fantastic singer who is seldom given enough credit. Singing with Joe Cocker is Tom Jones. Many comment on Joe's odd movements. But he once said it is just him mimicking playing piano and guitar. If you look close you can see that. As well, you can see similar movements made by Ray Charles behind the piano.

That is such a great version, thanks for posting that. I used to have a recording of me doing that song. I haven't sung it for a few years though. The man was great and I suppose it makes sense that he was one of my early influences because one of his influences was Ray Charles. And Brother Ray is my man!!!

My mind is totally blown. I just mentioned him yesterday in a post about influences. He was one of my early influences. I just found out about his death a few seconds before posting this. I'm blown away man. Really.
