Dante I'd love to see a clip of you performing then! I've had trouble finding much of your singing, let alone performing, online, yet what I've heard was fantastic.

IMO there should be no wait to perform anything. I believe we all have innate or previously developed talents, musical or otherwise, that are ready to perform with quite easy preparation - that is where you start. It's exactly where these 4 year old prodigies start who develop into superstars so why would we try to start any differently? Thing is, after a while where you get comfortable with performing ANYTHING, you realize it doesn't matter how awful you are, if you become good at THE SKILL OF PERFORMING, everyone will always have a good time.

What performing experience gives you is this kind of mindset:

Let's say you gave me a saxophone (i've never played the instrument) and put me on stage solo, no backing track, no rehearsal, and just told me to perform for 5 minutes.

Many people in that situation would just FREAK OUT and run off stage. I literally saw someone do that once when they WERE prepared (they ran off in panic after messing up one lyric!!!!). Memorable but really sad.

Guess what. After performing for 11 years on various instruments etc. if you put me in that kind of worse nightmare situation I'd just perform something else i CAN do. I have developed about 5 or 6 skills I could do spontaneously with no equipment and still entertain people. If I was hired to play solo sax instead, fuck it, I'm going to do what I need to to entertain this audience, that is the bottom line. Even if it's turning it into a comedy show with my attempts to play sax. You have to bring some kind of entertainment - as long as you bring that, doesn't necessarily have to be serious or relevant or anything just ENJOYABLE - you're golden and have nothing to worry about!!!

"Improvise, adapt and overcome" is the name of the game with performing, and also i'd also add confidence and fun.

Also, getting up on stage, looking out into the audience and hearing them applaud you for the first time is like 80% of the battle IMO.

No doubt. When I made the decision to sing I immediately learned a bunch of songs, my friends brother owned a bar and I would play Tuesday nights for forty bucks(I would have done it for free) I embarrassed myself week after week month after month until I turned around and realized I now had been gigging for over a year and now I had a keyboard player and drummer.
From then new bands bigger money moving to differnent states etc etc

don't sit in your room.. When I sit around for over 2 weeks and dont gig I lose my footing on singing and have to do a couple to get back to where it's consistent.. Your gonna sing perfect in your room once in a while but when you get out there there are new factors to deal with. As time goes on you learn how to deal with all these external factors.
Great post dante
