I have been compared to Jim Morrisson several times because i used to listen a lot to the Doors and i think i can immitate his voice decently even if hes more baritone than me.
Some of my friends think i also have a mix of Ian Gillan and the singer from Rage against the machine.

Most of the time, they are quite right in the sense that these singers had an influence on my singing, but it doesn't mean i am singing like them. I guess i have picked some of their patterns and blended them in my own singing.

Yep. I remember years ago being told I sound just like Phil Collins after a performance. I couldn't hear what the meant until listening back and I heard it when I belted a pure aw vowel on an E4. But other than that I didn't hear it.

More common nowadays is people comparing my singer/songwriter work to other artists and I think that's more a musical comparison but it could involve my singing too. I've been compared again and again to John Lennon, Peter Gabriel, and Randy Newmann, and none of them are artists I listen to much lol. However I've been commonly compared to Coldplay too and they are a big influence.

Its always a hard thing to interpret but that's why we have coaches to explain better what were good at now and what were not good at yet.

Its a good idea to just figure out which singers have a bad reputation for their singing and if you're compared to them it could be an insult, otherwise assume its a compliment.

Both of the comments you get I would consider neutral. They could be hinting at problems with your tone or complimenting that your voice sits high easily and works in prog rock styles....likely both.

As long as your singing is never compared to Bob Dylan, you're in the clear hahaha

I think the title of the thread explains enough.

Well, so far I've got told I sound a bit like post Awake era James LaBrie because apparently the guy found my vowels to be a bit unclear.

Another person told me I sound a bit like Geddy Lee.

I can't really see the link between my vocals and theirs though. While I have a high voice I wouldn't say that I sound as piercing as either one of them.
