Yeah I noticed that too; I clicked on a few other covers and very few people are singing in Sting's range.

Heck, Primus covered "Behind My Camel" over other Police songs because Les said Sting's phrases were too challenging!

Thanks a lot guys. If my voice gets stuck in someone's head, i consider that my goal is accomplished
I recently tried a heavier version, with a bit more mass and twang, but what happened confirmed what Phil told me about putting a lot of extra effort for an outcome that isn't signnificatively different.

I had a listen and some things improved. I see (hear) that you worked on correcting the "ing" from "walken" to Walking." it sounded much better. Keep in mind that this can also be played with as a matter of artistic taste. "walken" sounded wrong, but walkING is correct. However, depending on the song, or the pitch, for some songs the ING may be too pronounced so a softer "G" may be needed. It would sound closer to "IN" For some songs. IN...works good for blues. Or you could soften the G and use INg. It sounded good here but just a thought to keep in mind and how to play with the English language and apply it to a song artistically speaking, depending on the mood.

The one thing I did notice on both recordings and Owen may have already alluded to it, is the timing. You mentioned latency and that may be it. But here is a thought. The phrases and some words seem a bit drawn out to me. You may be missing the timing by doing this if you are extending some words. This song has a very distinctive beat. It is almost choppy to my ears. Sort of stacatto at times. I think you may be stretching some words and then it isn't leaving room. Somewhere around 1:27 there is something odd. It may be latency....I can't be sure, "My feet don't hardly touch the ground" My is late. But it may be from extending the previous word. Or latency Just keep it in mind.

Also around 1:20 "Walking back from your house" you revert back to "walKEN " then you fix it for "walkING" on the moon.

I really feel like I'm nit picking here. Sorry. It really sounds good, I think these are small issues. Also...I COULD BE TOTALLY WRONG!!! ha ha.

I'm not comparing you or your version to Sting. You are you...I've heard Sting before and if I want to hear Sting, I will buy his CD. I want to hear YOU. Learn from him but sing "YOUR" song. And that leads back to timing which, for me, leads to "phrasing."

Tommy, Phil, Owen,

Here is a new version.

https://app.box.com/s/6xl848kikf33rqks3ptu

I have tried to :
- Pay closer attention to rythm on the sentence mentionned by Owen
- Be closer to Sting's sound on the "ing"
- Be closer to Sting by suppressing diphtongs

I am not sure if its better. These little modifications took me almost as much time as the full cover itself.

For the rythm, i'd better instantly get it right because if not I become very self conscious. Also, what i do right is sometimes messed up in the mix because i have to correct each sentence since there is latency in my recording gear.

The "eh" wovels on "break" and "take" on the verses, i dunno either. I pounded on them for nearly half an hour without really feeling convinced. I feel it weird to belt the end of the sentences like Sting while i was originally ending up in a light mix. I mean, i can go for this sound, but then i just have to rework the entire sound and belt all the notes including the high Cs.

Tell me what you think guys! I am a bit angry at myself, just like for the word "through" in the Doors song -still can't sing it properly, always end up doing a strange tongue noise-
At least tell me its a bit better

I didn't really notice that actually, I was talking more about the rhythm of the lower phrases in between the high ones. I'm sure it is not a stamina issue it's just a matter of starting the phrase a bit later - it almost sounds wrong the way Sting does it, but that weird syncopation is part of the style.

Thanks man, this is very useful.
You are hearing things that i am sometimes not really aware of. If i do it consciously, i think the "ay" and "ing" things should be an easy fix.

I think what you mentionned about the rythm is also me trying to save some stamina and blasting the high C quicker than Sting and have longer A4s (i think this note shines more than the high Cs in my interpretation) so that the line isn't messed up too much.

Very cool overall. I do have a few comments:

The rhythm of the verse phrases you're doing are a bit more on the beat than what Sting did, especially "walking on the moon". He often (but not always) starts that one a quarter note triplet after the 1...very complex to rhythm to figure out technically so it's easiest to just listen and try to match it. Try pulling up the original version with vocals and comparing - this is a case where you actually may want to sing along - just so you can't hear where you're not matching him rhythmically. And then listen, stop sing it back, etc. and then go back to singing along with it to test out whether you are doing it correctly, until finally you are in the same timing on all the parts.

On the words with "ay" vowels like "take" and "break" (etc.), if you want to sing it more like Sting, you can leave out the diphthong and sing it on one pitch, just the G4. Think of it more like using a narrow eh vowel (listen to the vowel sound Sting uses). This will help reduce your vocal tract shifting anyways.

Again work on your "ing" sounds, you need to really focus on getting your accent out of those. For the singer's accent you can say "walkin'" or "walken'", but make sure it is not "walkayn'" or "walkaan'" and make sure when you transition to the N consonant you don't swallow the sound back. I would highly recommend working with Phil on words in this song or Don't Stop Believing that end with that "ing" and really dialing in a more convincing way to sing them.

Sting is using both more weight and twang than you so you could work on that if you want, although the way you are singing it is perfectly acceptable too, possibly better.

All in all just reference the original recording more and try to match what Sting is doing more and I think you will come a long way.

I find your accent a bit heavy and that kind of throws me off in songs sung by those with English as a second language, but that's more of a personal thing for me and has nothing to do with your tone or ability....which are both good!

I wanted to post this cover yesterday after i finished it, but i have reviewed some things this morning with Phil (leaning more in head resonance) that allowed me to rework the song so that it sounds better.

Sting is an awesome singer, and i have grown up listening to The Police because my parents used to dance rock when they were younger. I think i have kept somewhere a recording one year and a half ago, of me singing the same song in falsetto and trying to figure out how Sting could belt these notes. Anyways, i hope you guys like it. The hard thing for me on this song is the reggae tempo and this is what should draw my attention if i decide to do this again.
