Wow.you're freaking me out with all this iphone ( I don't own one) stuff and mixing and reverb and compression, EQ etc. I have no clue. I just hit record, then when done I hit save and that's it. Well, I'm sure you can tell by my recordings but hey...it is what it is! I'm clueless.

Nice job. I liked it. If I was forced to make a critique it would be on smoothness or flow in interpretation but then again that may be a recording flaw. So, going by what I said above about my recording skills and removing that from the equation. Then judging only by vocals I think they were good. "Maybe" just maybe, a bit of tweaking on the phrasing and interpretation. But that may be a matter of taste. It's a tough song, imo, to judge due to the mellowness and how that meshes with Morrison's vocals

Nice work

Really cool relaxed and strong voice man.

Number one thing I would improve here is the mixing of the song, sounds like you did it accoustic/distant from the mic and then mixed against the backing track, or captured it close to the mic and just added reverb, with low or no compression.

In either case it does not work well, because the backing track is done on a different way, I would try either playing the backing track live and recording the accoustic result together with your voice (if you did the first), or, compressing your voice more if you close mic it, to match the BT.

On the technical side, for this kind of song you will need some tensions to appear on the lower register, if you keep everything placed high and free like you are doing, the low notes will sound a bit too correct... Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for the critique Felipe!

Your first guess on how I recorded it was right I recorded my vocals separately on my phone mic and had my earphones in listening to the instrumental track that I used to overdub while I did the vocals. I made sure I could hear myself though and not have to shout over the music. I then used audacity to put in a dash of reverb (big mistake on my part. The raw track I was using was not compressed enough and it made the end result too muffled.) to match the original vocal track. From now on, I may just not mess with effects as much before I find the right EQ/settings for my voice/track.

Wow you confirmed my worst fears. I knew I went a little overboard on the suave sex appeal the song calls for Seriously though, actually I was tense through half of the song, I'm glad it wasn't too obvious hahhaha.

This is quite common when trying to darken the sound.
I recommend thinking about keeping the note in the same "place" as you darken the sound.
You will also need to maintain bright ping even through a dark sound (chiarroscurro) meaning , don't let your tone become muffled just because it's dark.

Thanks for the feedback guys! As a musician, I can hear when a note is a little off pitch right as it happens, but I did hear myself go flat in a few spots as it was one of those one take anything-goes kind of thing. The truth is, I did this song after about an hour of my KTVA workout so I had what Ken calls the "little boy voice" where my natural timbre was placed a lot higher and brighter than usual. I had to darken it up a bit, which sort of threw my intonation and placement a little off balance, I probably should have worked my lower range out before I tried this.

Yep, good vibrato and a pleasant timbre. Good job. Now I agree with owen about a few pitch issues. If you want to maintain this relaxed quality you need to know where exactly you have to go. Pay closer attention to the pitchy spots and you will rock it.

Cool man! Sounds great. The only thing I could critique is if you plan on singing this particular song again, the note at 1:40 sounds like you are unsure of the exact pitch. I'm not familiar with the original so I don't know the answer to that off the top of my head but I'm sure you could figure it out on your own!

Love how you really accurately captured the vibe of Jim Morrison's vocals without sounding like a carbon copy. Great tone, love the vibrato and breathy-ish texture, awesome!

Ok here's a classic Doors' song that is just really pleasant to listen to. It was a pretty stormy night when i recorded this and I just was in the mood for this song. I apologize for the weird quality, I recorded my vocals separately on my phone, and I accidentally covered the mic a few times which makes my vocals go a bit in and out. Hope you guys enjoy and if there's anything I can improve, let me know. Thanks in advance!
