With my friend Molly Reinold helping out on the harmonies. We've been doing some gigs together recently.
Let me know how I did. This performance definitely felt interesting to me...I'm curious how it comes across to you guys, please critique away!

Hi Owen,
Good job dude. What I want to ask is what are YOU noticing ?

What I'm noticing the most is the mic position is causing your head to stick forward and your jaw isn't free to drop down because of it. This prevents you from freeing and thinning out your voice so you compensate by spreading horizontally a lot and losing focus on the tone. It also causes you to lack the finesse and so you revert back to hitting all the notes "straight on" without crescendos/swells/fades/vibrato etc. You might want to experiment with having the mic closer to your face so that you are erring on the side of leaning back into the mic rather than leaning forward. That forward head posture occurs to all of us who use a lot of computers, it took me a long time to eradicate it from my posture.

Keep rocking out there bro.

Ahhh I see. I noticed all of what you're saying but I didn't think the mic position was responsible for the issues but I can see how it could have contributed.

I never PREFER to sing with this mic position haha I always like the mic way back as you mention.

This wasn't my setup and I was having trouble getting the mic close enough with that stand and how it was positioned. And being we had to transition between bands I try not to be too picky about those things but then it screws me up later haha. I could probably raised it way up more and extended the boom more horizontally forward - would look weird but get a better position.

If this kind of issue happened in the future would it be better to lean my whole torso forward to keep the neck aligned?

It did seem odd that my jaw wasn't opening much in the video, makes more sense now haha! I noticed the same thing with the Ah vowels going horizontal and my dynamics flattening but I thought that was just my own fault. I didn't plan out many moments of dynamic interest during rehearsal nor did I ever look in a mirror to check how I was forming vowels so I figured it was just the result of that.

I also noticed a lot of pitchiness...could that stuff be from the mic position again or is it something else?

I also just noticed my overall "vibe" was different. I was kind of on autopilot and felt like I couldn't add a lot of detailed intention. That was probably from the stress of putting this show together and having to take care of lot of things, when it came time to perform I felt like it was just like flicking a switch and I'm performing and then it's gone in a flash. But I think the big picture of the songs still came out okay.

Don't sweat it Owen, we all look back at our gigs sometimes and wish they were better. Keep walkin the path man!
as for leaning forward I would err on the side of leaning back, having the mic closer to you so that the back of your neck is elongated more instead of bent forward

Well, i have the same problem of pushing my head forward, and i can also notice this when i Watch my own live sessions. I preferred the rendition of the second song, where you both sounded more relaxed and confident. The first song has pitchy spots, and your friend is sometimes out while singing the harmonies. You seem to have warmth in your lower range and a potential for crooning.
