I figure this is a good place to complain. Around October 28 I started to feel like allergies were kicking in and felt a tickle in my throat, some sneezing and a little coughing. A bit tired also. I progressed slowly and my cough was getting worse as was the tickle in my throat. Post nasal drip. By November 6, I could just barely sing by shifting resonance and sort of playing with my voice but it was tough. By November 7th I was done. By The 9th my coughing fits were beating the crap out of me and my head was pounding. The throat tickle was unbearable. I finally went to the doctor on November 18 and he said the post nasal drip was filling my right lung and now I had bronchitis. Antibiotics and cough meds. The coughing has stopped and my lungs are clear but I still can't sing. All the problems singing (and to a degree speaking) are in the sinus' and that has been the problem all along. The throat is, and has been, fine. Once the pitch gets up anywhere in the pharyngeal area it's gone. I've tried moving the sound around other areas but it doesn't help. Well, not that I have been actively trying to sing. I'm not. It's just that every couple of days I test my voice and check it. Even humming doesn't work. I'm broken!

This has been a long haul.

if you have sinus issues humming will actually be the hardest thing since all the air and sound goes through your nose where the source of the problem lies. lip trills are better if you're trying to continue lightly working out the voice (which you should)

I was working my voice through exercises at the start. Hot showers and vocalizing in the shower. Tongue and lip trills, scales, ng, humming etc. It worked at the start but eventually it wasn't doing anything. I stopped doing any exercises other than anything that focuses on the nasal area such as...well....I don't know how to explain it in text...lol. Like a honk with an NG but doing it like a siren up and down. Like the note coming out of my eyes! I used the trills originally to sort of vibrate off any crap that might be collecting on my folds but they have become pretty clear. Now I'm doing more pharyngeal phonations to vibrate and loosen that area. But mostly I'm resting. It's not like I'm doing a sellout show or anything! ha ha ha. But I can kind of gauge where I am by humming upward in pitch from chest into head. The doctor said it will take a long time for my sinus to clear up because my nose has bee broke a few times and my septum is out of whack. I forgot to duck Laugh

Hi Tommy, you may be interested in a juice or water fast...in my experience these things have always done amazing things for myself and others...I think 10 days will really help you if you find this kind of approach resonates with you.

This morning my voice was still shot. Around noon I did some vocal exercises for just a brief period and sang three songs which weren't so great. Then tried to sing "Whiter Shade of Pale" only because the high notes are a true test of how my voice is doing in the pharyngeal area. Not good. But everything else, although still not good was better than yesterday. Now, a few hours later around 4:45 pm things have taken a huge step forward. And that's always better then moving backward.

Post nasal dripping really irritates the folds... And the sinus infection although not directly related to what we control, prevents the references of sensations we have from working well...

Meds, rest, and water :). Later if you still can't use the references, we just find some new ones, should not be a problem if the larynx is fine.

Thanks Felipe,

I think the voice is coming around today, finally after almost a whole month of this. Maybe we can do something now.

Same thing is happening to me right now (less intense in my case though). I exactly know how it happens and yet i know my voice will be f*cked for several days. I woke up this morning a bit Dizzy with an itching sensation in my upper pharynx. Then, a burning sensation in my sinus slowly sets in and it gets irritated. The nose starts to get stuffy and it drips in your throat, which several hours later, starts to get irritated too. It doesn't take longer than one day before my voice completely crapped out. Sometimes, my lunngs get infected too, and i have to wait for one week and half before my body is completely healed. I am able to reach D2 right now...

I'm mostly better now although I still get coughing spells. Also at times my voice breaks up at a certain point. Today has been pretty good though. I started doing strengthening exercises yesterday to work my voice back. This has been about 5 weeks.
Good luck.
